I Cannot Keep Him Any More

There is a sentence you have not said out loud, and I am going to say it for you so that it exists in the world and you can look at it.

I cannot keep him any more.

Not I do not want to. Not it would be easier if. Cannot, which is a word about capacity rather than about willingness, and which is the truest word available and therefore the hardest one.

The reasons will be yours and I am not going to guess at them. Health, money, a move, a landlord, somebody in the house who is not coping, a change in what you are able to do physically. Whatever they are, they are real, and you have almost certainly spent months trying to make them not be real before arriving here.

And you have not said the sentence to anybody, because saying it feels like doing it, and doing it feels like the thing you swore you would never do.

Sold for the smallest coin

There is a line where Jesus is talking about how attentive God is, and He reaches for the cheapest available example.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? (Luke 12:6, King James Version)

Five for two farthings.

That is a deliberate choice of illustration. He does not pick a valuable animal. He picks the one that was sold in bulk at the lowest price in the market, the creature nobody would think to count, and the point of choosing it is that the argument runs from the least valuable thing upward.

And notice the exact claim: not one of them is forgotten before God.

Not one. Not the bulk lot, not the general category. Each one, individually, is not forgotten by somebody who was not going to be paid anything for the attention.

Luke 12:6 has heaven keeping track of the specific creature that the market had already decided was interchangeable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reach somebody about to hand one over.

You are handing him to somebody who has never once forgotten a single creature. Luke 12:6 says not one of them is forgotten before God, chosen deliberately about the cheapest animal in the market, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns that from a general comfort into something about a specific animal with a name.

He does not leave God's hands

Here is the thing the fear is actually made of, and it is worth naming precisely, because Luke 12:6 answers it directly and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an answer that plain reach somebody at four in the morning.

You are not frightened that he will be badly cared for, or not only that. You are frightened that in handing him on you are handing him out of the only care he had, as though your hands were the boundary of his safety and beyond them is nothing.

That is what it feels like, and it is not what is true. He was God's before he was yours. That is not a nice thought, it is the actual order of events: something was made, and it ended up in your house for a while, and it was known before it arrived and will be known afterwards.

Luke 12:6 puts the not-forgetting in God rather than in the owner, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a person's limits from a creature's future.

You are not the boundary of his safety, and it has never once rested on your capacity. The written word says not one of them is forgotten before God, which locates the remembering somewhere other than in a household, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a creature in a room its person is not in.

I am not going to make this a relief

I want to be honest about the shape of this, because there is a version of this article that would be much more comfortable and would be a lie.

I am not going to tell you it is for the best. I do not know that. I am not going to tell you he will be happier, because I am not able to know that either and it would be a sentence designed to make you feel better rather than a true one.

And I am not going to tell you how or where. Not one word of advice about routes, organizations or arrangements, because that is a decision that needs somebody who can see your actual situation, and because this site has no business making it.

What I will say is that a loss is happening and that it is allowed to be a loss. You are not required to reframe this into something positive in order to be permitted to do it.

Luke 12:6 is not a promise about outcomes, it is a statement about attention, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold somebody in a genuine loss without needing it to be a good thing.

You are allowed to grieve something you are choosing, and it has never once had to be reframed to be permitted. Luke 12:6 offers attention rather than an outcome, and the Spirit of God is the one who stays with a person inside a decision that has no comfortable version.
